Scholarship

The Board of Directors subsequently voted to use the surplus funds from the
dinner dance to scholarships since the HKSAA is a school based non-member
organization. Two scholarship
endowment funds ($10,000 each) were established at
University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University.
Interest from the endowment funds is used to fund the scholarships. As of
2002, the Board voted to join forces with the Hong Kong Schools Alumni
Federation (HKSAF), our sister organization in Los Angeles, which formulated
itself by patterning after the HKSAA. Funds which are generated by HKSAA and
HKSAF are pooled together to provide scholarships to top needy students from
Hong Kong. A panel of educators in Hong Kong conducts the selection of the
candidates.
During
the earlier years, HKSAA donated to non-profit organizations like Self Help
for the Elderly, Chinese for Affirmative Action and the Chinese American
International School. Later on the Board of Directors felt that since HKSAA
is a school-based organization, surplus funds should first be dedicated to
scholarships.
